The essence of spirituality is the nothingness. Its the main teaching of the Tao. Its balance through inner silence, inner peace, and inner bliss, beside that there's really "nothing" to it. And yet, there are some principles that are taught within the idea of spirituality. There's a reason for that. The spiritual movement is more or less a response to the problems caused by religious doctrines, which are destructive within the scope of the human spirit and the way it works. Religion teaches us NOT to do things. And the spirit tells us that it just wants to express itself in as many ways as possible. It's unfortunate because through vast methods of propaganda, the people have been tricked and even forced to accept things that aren't necessarily true (remember the religious crusades?). We have been indoctrinated with the concept of right and wrong. How can we call any one thing right or wrong. We have been indoctrinated to believe that people are separated, and that a certain group will get the benefits of living by its religious beliefs and everybody else is doomed to suffer. The concept of God has been created, which in reality is all-encompassing, and yet these sects tell you that he favors one person or another. It's not even possible for these things to be true.
If you as a human being chose to associate with the spiritual side of yourself, and we all can, its easy to remember that we all came from the same place. We are all in some way interconnected and interwoven, and that doesn't change because somebody wrote a book saying otherwise. What does this nothingness that is the spirit do for an individual? It gives an individual something to reference their individuality and to compare it to the whole. It inspires creativity in character and in action, and it promotes the perpetuation and growth of the self. Religion only creates tighter and tighter boxes for people to live in. There was a time here when there was no religion, only the implied truth. We had to learn it, and the spiritual movement is one that promotes the "un-learning" of false knowledge. Hence meditation... Meditation is the ancient practice of silence. We are thrown so many distractions on top of the bullshit that it becomes hard to see ourselves. The silence gets us past the distractions so that we can SEE ourselves. What are we? The truth is that we are what we make of ourselves, and the truth is we are all descendant out of the nothingness, a "soul-family" so to speak.
The spiritual movement acknowledges that we have moved "downward" and away from ourselves, and is simply providing a way for us to get back to our base. We have catching up to do. And the evidence is in the events of the world... There are wars, friends disrespect and betray each other, we take from each other and we even prey on the weak. It a broken, failing society, and the only thing that can happen in the end is complete destruction of it all. How can anything hell-bent on destruction last?
